Biochem/physiol Actions:
Heme oxygenases are critical enzymes of heme catabolism that produces biliverdin. Further processing of biliverdin results in the Formation of bilirubin and carbon monoxide. HMOX-2 is a constitutive enzyme that also acts as molecular chaperone for adiponectin and is implicated in metabolic syndrome. It is an important marker of iron-related oxidative stress in age-related macular degeneration.
